I gathered the courage to go out and photograph this phenomenon. It was bone-chilling cold outside with the mercury hitting almost negative 24 degrees Celsius … But I had to go out and find a place to picture this, so I drove to a nearby lake towards the direction of the halo and captured maybe a dozen shots before I couldn’t feel my fingers. 😁

Sundogs, or parhelia, are luminous and sometimes colourful areas that appear on both sides of the sun at the same elevation in the sky. They give the impression that there are three suns in the sky and the refraction of sunlight in hexagonal ice crystals present in the atmosphere causes this phenomenon, which is pretty common here when the temperature drops below -20, given it’s a clear day.
